Are Pay Monthly Websites Worth It? (Honest 2026 Answer) - Pay Per Month Websites

We sell pay monthly websites, so read this with that in mind. We have still tried to give you the honest version, including the cases where paying monthly is the wrong choice, because a customer who signs up for the wrong reason cancels in four months and nobody wins.

The actual maths

A one-off small business website from a UK freelancer or small studio typically runs £1,000 to £3,000, and an agency build starts around £5,000. On top of that you are looking at hosting at £5 to £20 a month, and either a maintenance retainer or your own time keeping it updated.

A pay monthly plan in the £30 to £50 band comes to £360 to £600 a year with all of that included.

So on pure cost, the crossover is somewhere around year three or four. Before that, monthly is cheaper. After that, a one-off build you actually maintain yourself can be cheaper, if nothing needs redesigning and nothing breaks.

That is the part most comparisons stop at, and it is the least interesting part. Cash flow and risk matter more than the total.

The four things the maths misses

Upfront cash is not the same as spread cash. £2,000 today out of a small business account is a different decision to £32 a month, even when the three year total is similar. For a business in its first two years that difference is often the whole decision.

A one-off site decays. The £2,000 build is excellent in year one, fine in year two, dated in year three and a liability by year five. Almost nobody budgets for the rebuild. A monthly plan that includes updates does not have a cliff.

Someone has to do the maintenance. WordPress updates, plugin updates, SSL renewal, backups, the occasional break. If you are not paying for that, you are doing it, and your hourly rate is higher than the retainer.

Risk transfers. On a one-off build, if the site goes down on a Bank Holiday weekend that is your problem. On a monthly plan it is the provider’s problem, and that is genuinely part of what you are buying.

Who pay monthly genuinely suits

  • Businesses under three years old, where cash flow matters more than the five year total.
  • Trades and service businesses who need a professional presence but will never log in to edit it.
  • Anyone who has been burned by a build that went stale and could not be updated.
  • Businesses that need to test an idea without committing four figures to it.

Who it does not suit

Four situations where we would tell you not to buy a monthly plan, including from us.

You need something genuinely custom. A booking system with unusual logic, a members area, a real integration with your trade software. Monthly plans are built on repeatable patterns. If your requirement is not repeatable, pay once for it properly.

You have an in-house developer or a very capable family member. You are paying for convenience you already have.

You are a large or complex ecommerce operation. Hundreds of SKUs, complex shipping rules and stock integrations need a platform decision, not a website package.

You do not actually want a website. Plenty of businesses run perfectly well on a Google Business Profile, an active Instagram and word of mouth. If nobody is asking for your website, a monthly bill for one is not going to fix a demand problem.

The catch worth checking

The legitimate criticism of this model is that some providers keep the website. You pay for three years, you stop, and you have nothing to show for it because the design, the content and sometimes even the domain sat with them.

That is a real risk, and it is why we say you own your site in the headline rather than the terms page. Whoever you buy from, get the ownership position in writing before you pay anything. Our pay monthly website checklist covers the exact questions to ask.

The short version

Worth it if you are early, cash-conscious, want it handled, and you genuinely own what you are paying for. Not worth it if your needs are unusual, if you can maintain it yourself, or if the provider will not tell you plainly what happens when you leave.

We build small business websites from £32 a month with hosting, updates and support included, and you own your domain, your content and your site. See what is included or work out what yours should cost.
